What Is a Hackathon? A First-Timer's Guide to Building Something Real
Do you need to be a developer?
Some hackathons require specific technical skills. Others welcome people who contribute through design, research, business thinking, domain knowledge, or storytelling.
A team building a healthcare concept, for example, benefits from someone who understands the actual workflow. A developer cannot fix an incorrectly understood problem with cleaner code.
Check eligibility, required tools, team sizes, deliverables, and judging criteria before registering.
Pick one problem you can demonstrate
“Fix transportation” is too large for a short event. “Help a dispatcher see which driver has accepted a pickup” is a problem a team can explain and test.
Describe the user, the difficult moment, and the improvement. Choose the smallest workflow that makes that improvement visible.
Give everyone a clear responsibility
Assign responsibility for problem research, the user flow, building, integration, and the final presentation. People can cover multiple roles, but someone needs to own each essential output.
Agree early on where files live and how the team will combine its work. Reserve time for testing; a set of separate features is not an end-to-end demonstration.
Treat the demo as part of the build
Show one user completing one meaningful action. Explain which parts work, which are simulated, and what would need to happen before real deployment. Follow event rules about recordings or backup demonstrations.
Make the scope smaller when necessary. A short working flow can communicate more than a long list of unfinished features.
Prepare before arriving
Bring required equipment, check accounts and installations, and read the brief. Review ownership terms and whether pre-existing code or projects are permitted. Understand what happens to submissions after the event.
Afterward, save the project, document what remains unfinished, and reconnect with anyone who can help test it. Decide whether the concept deserves another week of work.
Next step: Find an event whose challenge and participation rules suit your team. If you are organizing one, the hackathon planning guide in this collection explains how to create a useful brief.
