Startup Accelerator vs. Incubator: Which One Do You Actually Need?
What is the difference?
An incubator commonly helps founders develop an early idea into a viable business. An accelerator commonly provides a structured period of support to move an existing venture forward. Programs overlap, and their actual requirements matter more than these broad descriptions.
Question | Incubator: common emphasis | Accelerator: common emphasis |
|---|---|---|
What stage does it support? | Idea exploration and early development | Ventures ready to pursue defined milestones |
What work might you do? | Customer discovery, prototyping, business formation | Product progress, sales experiments, partnerships, readiness |
What might the structure look like? | Ongoing or flexible support | A defined cohort and schedule |
Is investment guaranteed? | No | No |
Neither name tells you the funding terms, equity requirements, quality of mentoring, or usefulness of the network. Check those directly.
Match support to your bottleneck
If you cannot describe a specific customer and their problem, seek help with discovery and validation. If customers are testing your product but not returning, look for product and customer expertise. If customers buy but sales depend entirely on the founder, look for support building a repeatable sales process.
A founder with those three different problems needs three different kinds of help.
Ask better questions before applying
Ask what work happens between sessions, who provides hands-on support, how mentors are matched, and what outcomes past participants can describe. Review attendance requirements and any fees or equity terms. Ask whether support includes introductions only or help preparing for and following through on those introductions.
Choose one milestone you want to reach. “Run a pilot with three qualified customers” gives you a way to assess progress. “Become investment-ready” needs a clearer definition.
